Detective Bureau
Most people wonder what happens to crime once it has been reported. After a deputy writes an incident report in PPSO's electronic report writing system, the report is available for review by the Detective Bureau, sometimes within minutes. The Detective Bureau will review each report and prioritize them based on the solvability factors that are present, especially serious crimes. Once this process is complete, the cases are then assigned to detectives who conduct follow-up investigations.
General assignment investigations include crimes such as assault, burglary, robbery, fraud, theft, child abuse, and homicide. A detective may be assigned a homicide one day and a forgery case the next. Detectives work the crime scene through the investigation and into the courts. Crime scene investigation includes the processing of evidence such as fingerprints, photography, and documentation of the crime scene, as well as maintaining the property and evidence until submitted to the Property & Evidence Room.
