Radio Communications

The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office 2-way radio operations are under the command of Captain Mike Buras. Capt. Buras oversees and programs every radio in service with the Sheriff's Office. He often works with many other government agencies in the interoperability aspect of our 2-way communication hardware and software. Radio Communications is part of the Support Services Division.

The Sheriff's Office main Radio Communications System is called LWIN - Louisiana Wireless Information Network.

The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office is a member of the Louisiana Region 1 Urban Area Security Initiative (U.A.S.I.).  Members include government agencies from Plaquemines, Jefferson, St. Bernard, and Orleans Parishes.

The Region 1 USAI has completed work on a Motorola Astro P25 Digital 700/800 MHz radio system. The system went online on Jan. 21, 2007 at 6 am. The system utilizes resources from the former Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office 800 MHz Motorola digital radio system and the Louisiana State Police 700 MHz Motorola Astro P25 LWIN radio system.

The Region 1 system for Plaquemines Parish consists of these tower sites:

  • Three tower sites in Gretna, Metairie, and New Orleans East, this makes up the Northern Simulcast site, which looks and performs like it is only one site. This cell uses thirty channels.
  • The other sites are in Ironton, Buras, and Boothville.

The system allows users to complete Metro area coverage on one system. Users have shared their Talkgroups, which allows for greater interoperability, by giving users the ability to change a channel on their radios to talk to other agencies.

Users will also have interoperable Talkgroups (channels) that will work areas of the state where the LSP LWIN system has been installed. Go to the below link for information on the LSP LWIN System:

Statewide Interoperable Communications Executive Committee (SIEC)

Current users of the Region 1 system are:

  • Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office
  • New Orleans Police Department
  • St. Bernard Sheriff's Office
  • Several Municipalities in Jefferson
  • Various Fire Departments in all Parishes
  • Various EMS units in all Parishes
  • Various government departments in all parishes

Additional agencies will be added as resources become available for them.
