Special Operations Division
Under the guidance of Colonel Guy Laigast, the Special Operations Division (SOD) provides and oversees community-based programs within Plaquemines Parish. Below is list of programs associated with the Special Operations Division (SOD):
Citizen Police Academy - The Citizen Police Academy consists of one 2-hour class each week for 8 weeks. Participants will learn how officers in various divisions conduct their daily activities while on duty.
D.A.R.E. - Drug Abuse Resistance Education is conducted by Sergeant Lauren Roussell-Babin and Sergeant Aimee Pearsall. Officers teach the programs throughout the Plaquemines Parish school system to 5th grade students.
National Night Out Against Crime - This annual nationwide community-building campaign promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. Members of PPSO travel to organized neighborhood parties throughout the parish in an effort to continue to build on our already strong relationship within our community to fight against and reduce crime.
Buster School Bus Safety Program - Officers visit local elementary schools and use this interactive remote control school bus to teach school bus safety.
Toys For Smiles - This program distributes toys to Headstart, Pre-K and Kindergarten students throughout Plaquemines Parish during the Christmas season.
Self-Defense Classes for Ladies - This program is instructed by several officers in the Sheriff's Office. Ladies are taught how to defend themselves from an attack.
Teens and Cops Together (TACT) - This program is designed to help prepare the youth of Plaquemines Parish for life after high school. The high school teens participated in various activities such as; how to properly interact with law enforcement officers during a traffic stop, handling vehicular emergencies (changing flat tires/using jumper cables/checking oil), driving distracted/drunk (beer goggles), firearm safety, basic self-defense and more.
Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) - The SALT program focuses on communication and education between the seniors of our community and the sheriff's office addressing issues such as - Legal issues, Health issues, Financial issues, Power of Attorney, Elder Abuse, Fraud Prevention and many more. S.A.L.T. is a voice to advocate for action to ensure that seniors live in a healthy, safe, enjoyable and vibrant community.
Young Marines Program - The mission of the PPSO Young Marines Program is to positively impact our community's future by providing quality youth development programs for boys and girls between 8-17 years of age that nurtures and develops its members into responsible citizens who enjoy and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
