On Thursday, April 22, 2021, the Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo made a $2,000 donation in support of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office's (PPSO) continual involvement with the Special Olympics in Plaquemines Parish.

Jeff Edgecombe, Chairman of the Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo Committee, presented Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich, Jr. with the monetary donation at the PPSO Administration building in Belle Chasse.

"Everyone associated with the Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo admire Sheriff Turlich and PPSO's participation and support of these events every year," said Edgecombe. "We are honored to contribute to such a great cause and we look forward to volunteering our time to future Special Olympics events in Plaquemines Parish."

With the exception of cancelled events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich Jr. and PPSO have participated in the Plaquemines Parish Special Olympics events and the Law Enforcement Torch Run every year since taking office in 2016 along with providing lunches and drinks for all the participants, staff and guests.

"After the cancellation of these events because of the pandemic, we are anxious to continue our participation in upcoming Special Olympics events," said Sheriff Turlich. "The Special Olympics is truly a personal passion of mine and thank you to Jeff and the Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo for sharing this passion that benefits so many with intellectual disabilities."

The 71st Annual Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo is scheduled for the weekend of August 5 -7, 2021 at the Delta Marina in Empire. All proceeds from the rodeo are donated to nonprofit organizations in Plaquemines Parish.
