Special Operations Division

Below is list of programs associated with the Special Operations Division (SOD):

Citizen Police Academy - The Citizen Police Academy consists of one 2-hour class each week for 8 weeks. Participants will learn how officers in various divisions conduct their daily activities while on duty.

D.A.R.E. - Drug Abuse Resistance Education is conducted by Sergeant Lauren Roussell and Sergeant Aimee Pearsall. Officers teach the programs throughout the school systems of the parish in the 6th grade.

Hunter Safety Courses - Lt. Mike LeBoeuf organizes this program through his duties as Range Master for the Sheriff's Office.

National Night Out Against Crime - This nationwide event is organized through the Crime Prevention Office and assistance is given to the neighborhood watch groups to host block parties in their groups.

D.W.I. Mock Crash - This event, for high school students throughout the parish, is organized through the Crime Prevention Office with assistance from the Plaquemines Parish Emergency Medical Services, Port Sulphur Volunteer Fire Dept., U.S. Coast Guard, West Jefferson Medical Center, Plaquemines Parish Coroners Office, and the Louisiana State Police.

McGruff Crime Dog - Is the Crime Prevention mascot and visits local elementary schools to interact with the school children.

Buster School Bus Safety Program - Officers visit local elementary schools and use this interactive remote control school bus to teach school bus safety.

Toys For Smiles - This program distributes toys to underprivileged children during the Christmas season.

Self-Defense Classes for Ladies - This program is instructed by several officers in the Sheriff's Office. Ladies are taught how to defend themselves from an attack.

Alcohol Awareness Program - High School students from the parish are brought to area hospitals and are instructed by emergency room personnel on the dangers of drinking and driving.

Red Ribbon Drug Program - Officers travel throughout the parish talking to students in the parish school system about the consequences of using illegal drugs.
