OFFICIAL NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Belle Chasse, LA - Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich, Jr. announces that Plaquemines Parish resident, Mikal Black, 23, has been indicted by a Federal Grand Jury on July 16, 2021, with two charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and two charges of Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon.
In August of 2018, Black was convicted on felony charges in connection to a drug-related shooting that occurred in the Ironton Subdivision in March of 2018, which resulted in three years of probation and a court order prohibiting him from entering the Ironton area. Since his conviction from the 2018 incident, Black has been arrested an additional four times with three of the incidents occurring in the vicinity of the Ironton Subdivision. While released on bond from an incident in January of 2020, Black was arrested in July of 2020 and August of 2020, where he committed an aggravated assault while possessing a firearm. With the extremely violent nature of these crimes as well as continually violating the terms of his probation including the court order prohibiting him from the Ironton area, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office (PPSO), through its participation on the Federal Bureau of Investigations Violent Crimes & Multiple Offenders (VCMO) Task Force, sought federal charges leading to the indictment of Black by a Federal Grand Jury on July 16, 2021.
Mikal Black is currently being held on the federal charges at the Plaquemines Parish Detention Center.
