Hurricane Ida Update 2021

OFFICIAL NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

Tuesday, August 31, 2021, 5:15 p.m.

Belle Chasse, LA - Sheriff Jerry Turlich would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that there is an active nightly parish-wide curfew from dusk to dawn in Plaquemines Parish.

The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office (PPSO) will be conducting roadblocks/checkpoints during curfew hours on Highway 23 (Belle Chasse Highway) and Highway 406 (Woodland Highway) in Belle Chasse and on Highway 39 in Braithwaite at the Plaquemines/St. Bernard Parish line. Only Plaquemines Parish residents and individuals conducting official business in the parish will be allowed to enter. Identification MUST be presented to gain entry in the parish. As the majority of Plaquemines Parish is still without power, this will allow PPSO personnel to increase patrols within the neighborhoods to protect residents and their property as well as protect and aid emergency personnel and work crews during Hurricane Ida recovery efforts.

For residents returning to Plaquemines Parish after evacuating, please understand that there isn't a confirmed timeline for the restoration of power and due to this - supplies such as water, groceries, gasoline and medical supplies have been depleted and will not be readily available. Therefore, please obtain the necessary supplies prior to returning to Plaquemines Parish.

Although the Plaquemines Parish Government (PPG) is working the remedy the issue, there isn't any water available from Phillips 66 Alliance Refinery to Venice or on the eastbank of Plaquemines Parish. The water supply from Phillips 66 Alliance Refinery north on the westbank is potable and available, but due to lift station power outages - all parish residents are asked to limit water usage and flushing. Our goal is to get Plaquemines Parish residents home as soon as possible, but you must be prepared to live with limited resources.

Highway 39 on the eastbank of Plaquemines Parish has fully reopened. Currently, Highway 23 from Phillips 66 Alliance Refinery to the St. Jude Hump at Diamond on the westbank is impassable due to storm surge and debris. Without a safe passage at this time, there will not be any vehicular traffic allowed beyond Phillips 66 Alliance Refinery.

Please continue to monitor PPSO and PPG social media platforms as well as your local news sources for updates.
