On February 10-12, 2020, Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich, Jr. and the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office Training Division co-hosted a Supervision for Jail/Corrections Officers training class at the Belle Chasse Library.

31 students representing eight different Sheriff's Offices attended the course, which was provided by the Public Agency Training Council. Along with selected Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office personnel, deputies from Jefferson Parish, Lafayette, Lafourche, St. Martin, Orleans, St. Bernard and Adams County, Mississippi were in attendance. This vital course was instructed by retired Chief Perry Hollowell from Indiana, who has over 40 years of law enforcement experience as well as 20 years of military service.

"The Plaquemines Parish Detention Center is a state of the art facility with over 800 beds. It's imperative we provide continual education and training to enhance and optimize the leadership and management skills of our employees," said Sheriff Turlich. "It's an honor to be able to co-host a training class of this caliber that will ultimately benefit our employee along with our partners in law enforcement in the surrounding areas."

The training targeted issues common to supervisory positions in a Corrections environment. Discipline, legal issues, counseling, ethics and stress related issues were just a few of the topics discussed. The officers who attended the course were also provided instruction on different leadership styles, communication skills, problem solving and encouraging personal growth. The 31 students are now better prepared to cope with staff, inmates, public, peers and critical decision making in the demanding climates faced in detention facilities.
