OFFICIAL NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

Sheriff Gerald A. Turlich, Jr. announces the arrest of Mikal Black, 22, of Ironton with two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, one count of Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and one count of Violation of a Protective Order.

On the late evening of August 6, 2020, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office (PPSO) responded to a traffic incident regarding a vehicle striking an unrestrained dog on Highway 23 near Ironton. The driver of the vehicle stopped and contacted PPSO to report the incident, at which time a subject, identified as Black, arrived at the location and became irate after seeing the dog. While displaying an increasingly aggressive demeanor, Black returned to his vehicle where he appeared to search for an item. Due to Black's erratic behavior, the driver and companions of the vehicle, fearing an imminent threat, abruptly left the scene to meet with the responding PPSO deputies. As the driver was departing the location, multiple gunshots were heard.

"These actions are extremely reckless and unacceptable and we're fortunate this situation didn't turn into a tragic event," said Sheriff Turlich. "I would like to commend the individuals involved in this incident for remaining calm while obtaining the necessary information that aided investigators with the identification and subsequent apprehension of the suspect."

Subsequent to Black's arrest, investigators executed a search warrant where a handgun was recovered along with the seizure of an undisclosed amount of marijuana. As a result, Black was also charged with Possession with the Intent to Distribute Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Illegal Carrying of a Weapon while Possessing a CDS. Black is current detained at the Plaquemines Parish Detention Center.
